INDIRECT LIGHTING What is indirect lighting? Direct lighting is where the luminaires source is exposed, to light its surroundings. Opposite to this, indirect lighting is created by reflecting the light source on a surface, which then illuminate the surroundings. With indirect lighting you don’t look directly into the light source. What is glare? To understand the benefits of indirect lighting, you need to know what glare is and how it affects us. There are two different types of glare, which is caused by direct lighting; discomfort glare and disability glare. Discomfort glare occurs when there is a big difference in light contrasts. If you imagine a dark tunnel, where there is a lot of light at the end, you’ll experience this type of glare, because of the big transition of light. This happens because your eyes get used to the surrounding light, where big contrasts can seem bothering. Disability glare happens when a luminous flux (the total amount of light), which is emitted from the luminaire, forces the eye pupils to retract and reduce the field of view. We recognize this type of glare from when the sun is hanging low or we are looking directly into a light source.
